6 Things to Look for in a Real Estate Agent

When you’re selling your home, you want good results, fast. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple, and that depends heavily on the kind of real estate agent you hire.

On the Sunshine Coast alone, there are hundreds of agents, each promising to achieve the same thing, but few actually deliver.

What you want is a real estate agent that you can trust in and rely on to deliver quality results, but it doesn’t stop there.

Look far and wide…

Just because an agent is based in a location, doesn’t mean they should be your go-to. Sure, they might have a bit of knowledge about the area, but how good are their sales skills? How much knowledge do they have about the industry? What are their marketing tactics? These are all equally important things to consider. A good real estate agent will be able to sell a house anywhere.


Look for Service…

The best way to see what an agent can do is to see them in action. Feel free to attend house inspections to see how they interact with buyers, and what kinds of tactics they employ to encourage the sale. Note their organization – were they on time? Did they seem approachable? Were they acting professionally? Think of it as an audition for how they would perform for you.


Look for Dedication…

If you did decide to head along to the open house, leave your name and number and see if they follow up with you. This is a tell-tale sign of their dedication. A lazy real estate agent won’t follow up, a good one always will. Oftentimes, their level of communication has a lot to do with their level of commitment.


Look for Connections…

It’s important to have a positive connection with the agent when you meet them. You need to feel comfortable enough with them to have open and honest conversations. It’s also vitally important that you are able to trust in their competency. A good agent will always make you feel reassured and confident that they are doing everything they can to make the sale happen for you.

When it comes to real estate, it’s all about charisma. As a rule of thumb, you should never hire an agent you wouldn’t buy a property from.


Look for Results…

If your agent is ticking all of the boxes but fails to show you the results, it should raise some red flags. Anyone can talk the talk, but few can walk the walk. Find out the information surrounding their recent sales; how much did they sell for? How long were they on the market for? You need the proven results to be able to be fully confident in your choice of real estate agent.


Look for Market knowledge…

While it’s always a good idea to do a bit of personal research before you decide to sell your home, it’s imperative that you have a real estate agent that has done theirs too (thoroughly!). They should be able to tell you all about the demographics of the area, what sort of buyers would be interested in your property and what the current market looks like. These are key factors that have a huge influence on the sale of your property and an agent that doesn’t know this information is likely to be one that doesn’t have the expertise to sell the house in your favour.
